Advanced surf guiding at Balangan

Today we received the first big swell of the season, which lit up all the surf breaks. Swell period was Hawaiian size 19 seconds which meant the waves were very powerful. The advanced group decided on Balangan as the wave is less powerful than Uluwatu. The paddle out can be quite difficult on a day like today as there is not a very pronounced channel to help you. When you are out the back there is not much current and it’s all about wave selection – trying to find a wave that is not too fast. Today we were lucky and got a few long fast rides. The swell is increasing in size and tomorrow is forecast to be huge.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Very small today by Bali’s standards, but perfect for intermediate surfers today at Uluwatu, which is one of the best waves in the world for the quality and length of ride. At low tide the waves were breaking a bit fast but as the ride pushed in the waves were softer breaking and easier to make. A solid swell is forecast for tomorrow, and when it’s firing there is a huge range of breaks to choose from.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

Swell size is a little smaller today, perfect size at our go to beginners spot Padang Padang rights, also known as baby Padang. We are so lucky to be located just 2 minutes from a perfect beginner wave which is never flat. The advantage of learning to surf in Bali is that the waves are consistent and high quality. It is also much easier without the restricted movement and weight of a wetsuit.

Weather is partially sunny: as always in dry season, the sunshine is interspersed with some cloud cover. Wind is light offshore which is typical for April, and perfect for surfing.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

It was a choice between Uluwatu, which is Bali’s premier surf break, and Balangan which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali. We decided on Balangan, as the crowds are lighter and more mellow. It’s also a perfect location to hang out on the beach or in one of the local warungs. The waves were mostly head high which is perfect size for intermediates and there were some long rides to be had. A perfect way to start the day.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

Another sunny morning in Paradise and the waves did not disappoint us! Perfect offshore wind conditions and a solid swell delivered consistently head-high sets. Great to practice catching waves and first turns on the many right or left-handers.

Although the perfect conditions attract more people, professional guidance helps you to catch waves on the right spot in the line-up. At first, this can be difficult when surfing on a new surf spot for the first time, but once you get used to it you will be catching waves yourself in no time! This is what makes Padang-Padang so special, the consistency of waves and opportunities to improve your surfing skills.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Beautiful Balangan was the go for an early morning session today. Balangan still retains the charm of Bali before mass tourism, and has not changed very much this century. Bumpy windy road, long white sand beach, headland to protect from cross winds, and traditional warungs to drink a cold coconut juice. Balangan never gets flat and is a perfect location for intermediate surfers on conditions such as today when the surf is head high. Balangan has a very long reef with various sections which spread the crowd out nicely.

Beginner Surf Lessons at Padang Padang

Swell size is smaller today – perfect size for beginner and intermediate surfers. This morning we took the short 2 minute ride to baby Padang, which is our go to spot for beginners and improvers. There was very little wind and a slight bump on the wave face, but very good conditions for riding your first green waves. At this size swell on a high tide, the waves break very mellow and the rides are long enough to improve your stance and balance as you progress through the ride. The wave eventually fattens out in deep water and there is a deep water channel that makes it easy to get back in the line up. Relatively uncrowded and lots of waved and fun was had by all our students.

Intermediate surf guiding at Padang Padang

Surfing in the afternoon or late evening in Padang Padang can be magical. When the wind stops blowing and the sun sets, glassy wave conditions are not unusual. Often it can be better than in the morning due to a smaller crowd in the water.

Even though the waves were not perfectly glassy at this time, the lack of other surfers out there made it easy for us to catch many waves. The beautiful view of the sunset combined with the fun waves makes this experience very memorable. A cold Bintang or Coconut on the beach after the surf session is a great way to end the day.

Intermediate surf guiding at Nyang Nyang

Nyang-Nyang was on fire today as the small swell slowly faded away. A hot spot for many good surfers and professional athletes to practice. As the crowd wasn’t too bad this morning, we were able to catch great waves ourselves. Watching the locals tear apart the perfect walls of water, is a nice way to catch a breath between sets.

Soon, the new swell will arrive and we expect head-high to overhead sets from tomorrow on. Uluwatu will be a great choice as well as other surf spots like Impossibles, Dreamland, and Balangan. The rainy season is almost over and we are experiencing mostly offshore winds in the mornings and afternoons on the west side of the Bukit.
