Surfing at Secret Spot

Secret spots are what eveyone is interested in. People say that there are no more secret spots in Bali but that is because they don’t know of them. In the last 10 years or so quite a few of the secret spots such as Gunung Payung and thunders are now recognised spots. We surfed Gunung Payung for a long time before realising that Pandawa is a better quality wave and located nearby. For a long time Pandawa was our go to spot in the rainy season but slowly the number of people in the know grew, and it was totally blown when the government built the road and turned it into a resort. We recognise the importance of tourism to the Bali economy and out view is that the development at Pandawa is tastefully done so raise no complaints.

We are going to follow standard convention and not give any information regarding the location of the remaining secret spots but can give a clue. Sometimes the secret spot is closer than you think and you can see the waves breaking but there is a herd instinct to surfing whereby everyone follows where everyone else surfs. It doesn’t have to be like that. There are top quality waves breaking close to the shore that don’t need a boat access. You can paddle from the shore. Seek and you shall find.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Our run of small wave days continues. But, there are always waves at Uluwatu, and that is where our intermediate and advanced surfers went this morning. The surfers found shoulder-high surf at the most exposed end of Uluwatu. Conditions were beautifully calm and clear, with stunning views of the tropical reef just below the waves. surf was slower than what is expected at Uluwatu, but the rides were long and organized. The view from the lineup was remarkable with the iconic Uluwatu temple sitting above the towering cliffs.

The Uluwatu Temple is a stunning venue steeped in history, incredible views, and is the site of a nightly kecak dance that is not to be missed. Not just a top tourist attraction, the site is very import culturally for the Balinese.
