Cucukan is a good small wave location on Bali’s East Coast that breaks in a small bend in the coastline. This is a very ripable wave when head-high and under. This is a medium-length wave, which features fun turn sections and the occasional barrel. This is a high-tide-only break thanks to a sharp reef and a shallow end section. This is a great wave for intermediate and up surfers, just be careful not to surf when the tide is not high enough. The combination of thumping east coast waves over sharp reef can be painful.
You need to surf the wave in the morning before the sun heats the land up, drawing the wind onshore. During the dry season, the tradewinds will blow onshore all day.
A highlight of this wave is the laid-back vibes and less-crowded lineups. Most travelling surfers head to nearby feature breaks like Keramas or Klotok, and skip this place altogether.
