East coast surf breaks include the world famous and world-class Keramas (advanced surfers only) and start in the far south of the island at Nico beach, Nusa dua and go all the way up to Jasri (excellent right point for intermediates) on the northeast of the island. People think that the east coast comes alive only in the wet season, which is not true. The east coast is surfable year round but the SE trade winds blow out the swell, so from May-September, these breaks can only be surfed early morning, but from October-April, the wind can be favourable all day. Wet season winds are generally from the south-west which is cross offshore or side shore (not great) or westerly direction, which is much better as perfect offshore for most breaks. The more northerly breaks like Keramas and Jasri are close to a 3000-metre mountain which blows cold offshore wind most mornings. Southerly breaks at Nusa Dua and Sanur are more exposed to the trade winds as they don’t benefit from the high mountains close by.
