Impossibles Surf Spot Info, Report and Forecast

Surfing at Impossibles

Impossibles is located very close to the surf camp and was named appropriately as most waves are impossibly fast. It is all about knowing where to sit in the lineup and wave selection. At Uluwatu, if the wave has a short line, then it is best avoided as it will be a short ride. The opposite is true at Impossibles. You are looking for the waves with a short line that taper significantly, as these are the best ones. It is not unusual to take off close to Padang Padang and ride as far as the warungs at Bingin. Many guests at the surf camp come back from a session here and say, “I had the longest ride of my life”. Most waves will close out or be too fast at some point, but the ones that go to Bingin, start off at double-triple overhead and can be ridden to knee-high. It’s a long paddle back, and you only need two great rides to make an epic session. Is two waves a good session? If you question this, then that means you have never experienced the speed and length of a good ride here.

Unlike Uluwatu, there is no current out the back, so instead of constantly paddling, you just need to be patient and wait for the right wave. There are regularly long periods with no waves breaking and then low and behold a 20-wave set rolls in. You will see many magazine cover photos of Impossibles with lines stacked to the horizon and a succession of perfect waves rolling in.

On the biggest days, it can be worthwhile to paddle out in the channel at Padang Padang to save the risk of getting pounded by a set which will sweep you to Bingin. There is no current on the outside but a strong current on the inside and a dangerously sharp reef.

Plenty of water at high tide and zero chance of hitting the reef. Be careful getting in and out of the water at low tide as the reef is finger-shaped with unexpected shallow parts designed perfectly to flay you. Riding the whitewater in on your belly exposes you to the risk that your fins get jammed on the reef, and you go face-first over the board. Because this wave requires a big swell and local knowledge to get those kilometre-long rides, it is best to surf with a local top guide or read our Ultimate Guide to Surfing Impossibles.

Advanced surf guiding at Imposible

We are seeing much smaller surf this morning after yesterday’s large swell. With Uluwatu still breaking at Outside Corner and The Bombie, our advanced group paddled out at Impossibles chasing those famous long lefts. The surf was mostly in the overhead range with a few larger set waves. The Tradewind was light offshore, creating clean conditions with no noticeable current. The waves were breaking quickly, but the best ones offered extended rides down the reef.

Impossibles is one of the longest left-handers in Bali when everything comes together. With the right tide, swell, wind direction, and good wave selection, you can get some very long rides.

Advanced surf guiding at Imposible

Our advanced surfers are back at Impossibles this morning chasing those incredibly long rides the wave is known for. The swell has jumped to the 1.5x overhead range with some larger sets. The wind was blowing strong offshore, which held up the waves just a little longer. With careful wave selection and a bit of luck, the surfers were able to lock into some lengthy rides.

Impossibles is a fast, racy wave that is very picturesque. There are 3 separate peaks on this wide reef, breaking up the crowds. On the right conditions, with a good size swell and offshore wind, the sections can link up for the longest rides in Bali.

Intermediate surf guiding at Imposible

The swell has picked up overnight so our advanced surfers set off to surf the scenic waves at Impossibles. The surf was in the 1.5 times overhead range on the biggest of sets, with an offshore wind and a very smooth ocean. The waves with the best shape lined up for long rides, however getting these rides requires careful wave selection and the ability to move down the line quickly.

Boasting a panoramic view of the Bukit’s surf zone, the lineup at Impossibles is an incredible place to be. When big enough to break properly, you can see the sets of waves breaking at Outside Corner, Padang Padang Left, and all the way down to Dreamland and the outside of Balangan.

Intermediate surf guiding at Impossible

A new swell arrived this morning and gave us plenty of opportunities to catch waves today. Impossibles is one of the longest left-handers in Bali when everything comes together. The right tide, swell, and wind direction is necessary for the many sections to connect and for the wave to peel perfectly over the reef.

On a smaller swell, it can be tricky to make it around the next section, but it is a great training ground to practice generating speed. This is a crucial skill and it is important to master if you want to get your surfing level to the next level. It will help you not only to get around breaking sections but also to surf the waves longer and therefore have more fun.

Advanced surf guiding at Impossible

The swell was quite small at 6am and it looked like Uluwatu would be the go, but as the tide came in the new swell arrived and there were some solid sets coming through. We decided on Impossibles for a change and was very good at start of the session. Around 9am the wind came on strong, and many of the waves were too fast. There was some bombs that were not too fast. The trick as Impossibles is to pick the wave with a short line as these break the slowest. Long line waves are too fast.

Advanced surf guiding at Impossible

Huge swell today and quite stormy conditions, which is unusual for this time of year. August is normally endless sunshine but there were some heavy showers. The photos look like Padang Padang, but actually were shot at last section of impossibles, which was firing some square barrels today. Only 5 guys brave enough to take on impossibles today. We took a look at Uluwatu and just 1 guy out as massive and a bit lumpy.

Perfect size at impossibles this morning, if you didn’t mind taking the bigger sets on the head! Just a handful of guys out and some leg achingly long rides to be had. As always with impossibles, wave selection and positioning is key. Many close outs, but you only need to get a couple of long rides to have an excellent session. Swell is a touch smaller than yesterday but there were 10 wave sets and needed to be careful not to get swept inside.

Advanced Surf Guiding at Impossible

The alarm this morning rang at 5:20 and at 5:50 we were paddling out at impossible. The swell dropped overnight, but the condition were perfect clean and overhead. The waves today offered super long fast rides with occasionally barrels with very light offshore winds. The swell is still consistent, the tide was perfect and we really enjoyed our session with only 3 people in the water.

Advanced Surf Guiding at Impossible

Perfect clean overhead conditions this morning for our advanced group at the legendary Impossible. The waves today offered super long fast rides with occasional cover ups. The effort to get up early was well rewarded. The condition of impossible aren’t easy, but when the condition are right, Impossible is one of the most perfect wave in the area. A massive swell at low tides produces big clean barrels for the brave, with consistent swell – like today – is a great improver spot for learning to pop up fast and pumping.
