Mengiat Surf Spot Info, Report and Forecast

Surfing at Mengiat

Mengiat is an A-frame reef break in Nusa Dua that offers left and right-handers over a shallow reef, with deeper water sitting just beyond the edge. The wave is often described as “peaky and bowly,” and has a look that’s somewhat reminiscent of the Mentawais—at least from the beach. It breaks in a beautiful setting along a pristine white sand beach, with manicured gardens and an easy-access car park making it one of the more pleasant entry points to any wave in Bali.

The left is generally the better and more user-friendly side of the peak, especially for intermediate surfers. It breaks into a deep-water channel, making it easier to paddle back out and reposition. The right is more difficult to access due to a current running down from Geger, and it typically requires more effort to stay in position. Mengiat works best at mid to high tide, and while the wave can appear flawless from the shore, it’s often fast, short, and hard to position for. On small swells, the inside section can be manageable for beginners, but on larger days, the current becomes too strong and the take-offs too tricky for anyone without experience.

Paddling out is easiest through the channel next to the left, but once in the lineup, getting into the right spot can be challenging due to shifting peaks and the push and pull of the current. The wave itself is fickle—on its day, it can deliver short, punchy rides with a fun bowl on the end section. But more often than not, it falls short of expectations. Still, for surfers seeking a quieter alternative to Bali’s more famous waves, Mengiat offers a visually appealing setup with moments of quality—if you’re in the right place at the right time.

Intermediate surf guiding at mengiat

Fun waves at Mengiat this morning! There was plenty of wind, but the surf was pumping with a light crowd! The stiff offshore breeze allowed fun left and right peaks to form. The lefts offered a particularly fun, wedgy shape, which allowed for plenty of speed for the surfers to do their best turns. The waves were in the shoulder-high range, with a few larger waves. Most of the crowd chose to surf at Chicken Wings on the other side of the deep channel, which made the lefts and rights at Mengiat that much more appealing.

Mengiat is a less-often surfed A-frame peak breaking left and right. The wave is “peaky and bowly” due to the shallow water on the reef and deep water just beyond the reef.

Intermediate surf guiding at Mengiat

Very light winds this morning but Uluwatu was a bit messy and Bingin was too small. We decided to drive the 20 minutes over to Nusa Dua where it was sunny and light offshore winds, and decided on Mengiat for a change. Only 3 people in the water and breaking very good at the start of the session. Crowd got up to a maximum of around 6 or 7 people and there were plenty of head high waves for everyone.

The wave is an A frame peak breaking left and right, and quite “peaky and bowly” due to shallow water on the reef, and deep water at the edge of the reef. It’s similar to some of the breaks at Mentawais and in a very beautiful location. The lefts are more user friendly as takes you into a channel with the current helping you get back into the spot. There is quite a lot of current running down from Geger, so the rights are harder work as you got to paddle against the current to get into position. A bunch of good lefts was the order of the day.
