Uluwatu Surf Spot Info, Report and Forecast

Surfing at Uluwatu

Uluwatu was “discovered” in the 1970’s by Aussie surfers travelling to Bali to party. They could see the long perfect waves from the aeroplane and made the trek from Kuta. Until the 1990’s access was quite difficult to Uluwatu, and even after the paved road went all the way you still had to climb up and down the ladder holding your surfboard. These days there are steps and railings to help you to and from the famous cave. Uluwatu is never flat and never empty, but the reef is very big, and there are many sections. The wave can comfortably hold 100+ surfers when the surf is pumping. Surfable on all tides, it takes some time to know which section works best on which tide. While the peak is consistently pumping out the biggest waves, it attracts the crowd like a moth to a flame. Easy paddling distance from the peak is temples which is best on high tide and is a fast barrelling wave that is usually less crowded than the peak but has a hard-core crew of ex-pats. Learn everything you need to know with our in-depth guide to surfing Uluwatu!

The surf camp’s favourite section is The Racetrack which starts directly in front of the paddle out of the cave and can go all the way to the big rock where the water photographers are waiting to get the barrel photo of a lifetime. The Racetrack requires patience and steely resolve not to follow the herd to the peak, but when the right one comes your way, you will be well rewarded. It’s not called The Racetrack for nothing, and even when shoulder high, you can get a powerful ride 400 metres that will amaze and delight. our expect surf guides can get you into world-class waves and coach you through the barrel section.

Unlike other breaks on the western coast of Bukit, the swell hits Uluwatu directly, which gives greater size and power, but it is not always as clean as the other breaks on the coastline. From Padang Padang to Balangan and the breaks in between (Impossibles, Bingin and Dreamland), the swell refracts and cleans up the swell. Uluwatu can be perfect on a small to medium-sized swell, but there is a lot of water moving when the swell is double overhead+, so a bigger board is required. Outside Corner is the premium big wave spot in Bali and can break fast and perfectly before mellowing out in deep water. On massive days (Uluwatu can hold 30-40 foot swells), it is possible to get a ride from the Bombie all the way through to Outside Corner, which is approximately 1 mile but be careful as drownings are not unusual.

Advanced Surf Guiding at Uluwatu

Surf heights at Uluwatu have backed off quite a bit since yesterday. It was a slower morning out there, with the bulk of the waves sitting in the head-high range and just a few larger sets breaking the lull. There was a slight bump to the lineup, but a light offshore wind did its job to keep the faces nicely groomed.
When the sets did show up, they were lining up well. A few waves offered some proper tubes, and instructor Jerry managed to find his way into a couple of good ones. The rest of the crew had plenty to work with too, picking off some long, down-the-line walls that opened up perfectly for a few solid turn sections. Overall, just a really fun day in the water.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Uluwatu

Fun morning at Uluwatu in the surfing paradise of Bali! The waves were shoulder-high range with occasional bigger sets rolling through. The session started beautifully clean with light offshore winds and fast, lined-up lefts. Andrea and Jerry surfed near the peak, finding smooth, tapered lefts perfect for cruising. Meanwhile, Randy and Nour positioned themselves right at the Racetrack in search of those long, winding rides with multiple turns and barrel sections that the racetrack is famous for.

Everyone snagged great waves and enjoyed the stellar lineup conditions. However, quick timing was absolutely essential today. The tide was moving fast, making it crucial to time your paddle-out perfectly before too much water flooded the shallow reef.

Big Wave Day at Outside Corner and The Bombie

October 15th brought a powerful big wave day to Uluwatu, Bali. Pro surfer Rio Waida, his brother Ryuki, and several others charged massive sets at Outside Corner, displaying serious commitment and control. Up at the Bombie, conditions turned critical with huge barrels and heavy closeouts testing every surfer in the lineup. Strong offshore winds added to the challenge, creating both opportunity and risk. With the dry season coming to an end, just one more big wave day remains on the forecast before we begin to settle into the quiet season.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

A fun morning of waves at Uluwatu’s Race Track! Our intermediate surfers enjoyed long lines and steady waves, with sets reaching head-high and smaller waves in the waist to shoulder-high range. The swell continued to ease from yesterday, alongside a full, fast-moving tide that kept the lineup shifting. The wind changed directions throughout the morning but conditions stayed clean.

This time of year is great for beginner and intermediate surfers in Bali. The powerful dry season swells have not yet fully arrived, the tradewind remains offshore and light, and there are still a few fewer people in the lineup.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Another beautiful morning in the world’s premier surfing holiday destination. With the dropping swell, our crew slipped down to the most exposed end of Uluwatu for some fun left reef break waves. The biggest of the set waves were up to head-high. The wind was blowing light offshore, and the waves were very clean. The waves broke with a nice blend of fast and slow sections, which is perfect for doing high-speed turns.

A powerful swell is on its way to Bali. Tomorrow morning will see overhead surf, building to well-overhead by sundown. See you out there!
