Intermediate Surfing in Bali

Intermediate surfers are those who are able to catch green waves without guidance or being pushed into a wave. An intermediate surfer will have transitioned from a soft top to a fibreglass board, and depending on how skilled they are, they may be on a shortboard. An intermediate surfer will have the ability to ride down the line with control of their surfboard and have a basic feel for how the weight distribution affects the speed and flow of the surfboard through the wave face. The intermediate surfer will be able to read the wave as it breaks down the line, identifying when they are too deep and need to speed up or they are too far on the shoulder and need to do a cutback. They will be able to make more challenging drops, and be able to identify where to sit in the line-up.

Bali is an excellent destination for intermediate surfers. We have a wide variety of waves matching every ability and preference. Some excellent waves for intermediate surfers are Toro-Toro, Dreamland, Balangan, and Medewi.

We are experts at helping intermediate surfers overcome roadblocks in their surfing, taking them to the next level. Padang Padang Surf Camp is very close to an excellent section of waves for intermediate surfers.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Black Stone

The wet season is out in full force today with heavy rain and erratic winds, but the Bali magic remains: it’s always offshore somewhere.

That “somewhere” today was Nusa Dua. Over at Blackstone, the conditions were surprisingly clean despite the gray skies. Waves were consistently shoulder-high on the sets, offering beautifully shaped lefts and rights. While the rights were the crowd favorite, one standout woman was absolutely ripping, putting on a clinic for everyone in the lineup.

Even on a soggy day, Bali delivers. Compared to most places, a “bad” day here is still a win.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Geger Left

What a morning at Geger Left! The ocean delivered beautifully lined-up lefts offering long, fast walls perfect for performance surfing—we’re talking high-speed top turns, deep bottom turns, and solid cracks off the lip. While the lefts were the main event, regular footers managed to snag some fun rights in the mix.

Despite a touch of side-shore wind, the waves held their shape impressively with clean faces throughout the session. The lineup vibe was completely relaxed, with everyone trading waves and soaking up the conditions. Just a classic, fun session for everyone involved.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Toro Toro

Toro-Toro delivered another enjoyable session today. The swell has picked up, but the reef offers protection that kept the waves manageable and fun. Despite stronger winds, the conditions stayed consistent, providing plenty of opportunities for everyone to catch waves and work on technique.

Long, mellow rides down the reef made it a productive morning for building confidence and improving skills. Toro-Toro remains a reliable option for beginner and intermediate surfers, showing why Bali offers such a range of spots to match the day’s conditions and give surfers the chance to progress.

Surf Lessons at Toro Toro and Airport Right

The surfers headed out early to Toro-Toro, where shoulder-to-head-high waves greeted them at sunrise. On the right, steeper takeoffs led into long, mellow walls that ran farther than expected. As the tide filled in, some surfers shifted to Airport Right, where the new swell began to pulse and waves broke with more speed and power over the reef. Conditions stayed clean throughout the session.

Surfing the airport reefs is always a unique experience—from the boat ride to the lineup to planes taking off and landing nearby. The waves build quickly and run long down the reef’s angled contour.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

A fun morning of waves at Uluwatu’s Race Track! Our intermediate surfers enjoyed long lines and steady waves, with sets reaching head-high and smaller waves in the waist to shoulder-high range. The swell continued to ease from yesterday, alongside a full, fast-moving tide that kept the lineup shifting. The wind changed directions throughout the morning but conditions stayed clean.

This time of year is great for beginner and intermediate surfers in Bali. The powerful dry season swells have not yet fully arrived, the tradewind remains offshore and light, and there are still a few fewer people in the lineup.

Intermediate surf guiding at Balangan

Fun waves at Balangan this morning! The surf has dropped slightly in size and consistency from yesterday, offering waves mostly in the shoulder to head-high range, with occasional larger sets. The session started with perfectly light offshore winds, shifting later from the south as a local squall passed nearby. The rising tide helped slow down Balangan’s typically fast walls, providing surfers with fun rides and opportunities to improve.

Surfers concentrated on learning when to accelerate and when to ease up—a crucial skill for extending rides and maximizing each wave. Overall, it was a relaxed, enjoyable session, and everyone left the water smiling.

Intermediate surf guiding at Geger Left

More quiet-season fun at Geger Left in Nusa Dua this morning! Light offshore winds kept the waves exceptionally clean, with swell coming through at head-high and occasional larger sets. Surfers enjoyed fast, peeling lefts with a few bonus rights to mix things up.

Surfing Geger Left is all about smart wave selection—you need to spot waves with a clear peak and a nicely tapered wall, or they’ll quickly outrun you. Choose wisely, and you’re rewarded with a smooth wall offering two or three solid turn sections.

Intermediate surf guiding at Uluwatu

Another beautiful morning in the world’s premier surfing holiday destination. With the dropping swell, our crew slipped down to the most exposed end of Uluwatu for some fun left reef break waves. The biggest of the set waves were up to head-high. The wind was blowing light offshore, and the waves were very clean. The waves broke with a nice blend of fast and slow sections, which is perfect for doing high-speed turns.

A powerful swell is on its way to Bali. Tomorrow morning will see overhead surf, building to well-overhead by sundown. See you out there!
