Nungalan Surf Spot Info, Report and Forecast

Surfing at Nungalan

Nungalan is a shifty, powerful right-hander on Bali’s South Coastjust east of Nyang Nyang. There’s a small warung on the cliff where you can grab a cold coconut and check the conditions before heading down to the beach—a good idea, since the wave is often wind-affected or breaking too fast.

This spot is best suited to advanced surfers. The wave gets heavy quickly, even on a medium swell, and the reef is sharp and unforgiving. There’s also a short left that breaks under the right conditions, but like the right, it’s only manageable for intermediates when the swell is very small. Low tide is a no-go, as the wave breaks too quickly and the reef gets dangerously shallow. Aim for mid to high tide.

Nunggalan is very exposed to wind and usually only surfable early in the morning before the wind picks up. When it’s clean and the swell lines up, the wave offers a powerful and rewarding ride. The beach is quiet and beautiful, with long white sand and a rusting shipwreck sitting on the shore. If you’re looking for uncrowded waves on a small wave day, Nungalan is worth a look.

Intermediate and Advanced Surf Lessons and Guiding at Nungalan, Bali

This morning, our intermediate and advanced surfers headed out to try and make the best of what little swell there was with a drive to Nungalan on the south coast of the Bukit peninsular.

On arrival at the car park, waves appeared to be breaking cleanly with a light offshore wind but, unfortunately, by the time the group had hiked down through the forest to the beach, the side-shore wind had increased and the previously clean waves were no more.

The group tried to make the best of the conditions and all caught a few waves but it was just one of those days when mother nature wasn’t on our side!
