Intermediate Surfing in Bali

Intermediate surfers are those who are able to catch green waves without guidance or being pushed into a wave. An intermediate surfer will have transitioned from a soft top to a fibreglass board, and depending on how skilled they are, they may be on a shortboard. An intermediate surfer will have the ability to ride down the line with control of their surfboard and have a basic feel for how the weight distribution affects the speed and flow of the surfboard through the wave face. The intermediate surfer will be able to read the wave as it breaks down the line, identifying when they are too deep and need to speed up or they are too far on the shoulder and need to do a cutback. They will be able to make more challenging drops, and be able to identify where to sit in the line-up.

Bali is an excellent destination for intermediate surfers. We have a wide variety of waves matching every ability and preference. Some excellent waves for intermediate surfers are Toro-Toro, Dreamland, Balangan, and Medewi.

We are experts at helping intermediate surfers overcome roadblocks in their surfing, taking them to the next level. Padang Padang Surf Camp is very close to an excellent section of waves for intermediate surfers.

Intermediate Surf Guiding at Toro Toro

Toro-Toro turned on at first light with clean, shoulder-to-head-high peaks breaking in both directions thanks to the powerful swell we have today in Bali. The kids were the standouts this morning, trading long rights and a few fun lefts while the early glass held, linking turns down the line as the sun rose over Jimbaran Bay. Consistent sets kept the lineup moving, and the deep channel made for an easy paddle back after every ride.

We’re now in peak dry season, but with lighter winds than usual for this time of year, conditions have stayed extra clean. Sessions like this are why Toro-Toro remains the surf camp’s favourite wave — easy takeoffs, playful walls, and rides that run longer than you expect.

Surf Guiding at Airport Right

A light southeast trade wind put some texture on the faces this morning, but there was still plenty to work with. Most sets came in at head high, with the occasional well-overhead pulse giving the lineup a bit more energy. The mid-wave section was doing cutbacks all morning — open faces and good pace off the takeoff — and the end section threw a short, punchy barrel over the reef when the timing was right. Tide was sitting high enough to keep things manageable.

Compared to the more exposed breaks on the Bukit, Airport Right was the sensible call today: rewarding for confident intermediates and advanced surfers willing to work for it.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Uluwatu

Fun morning at Uluwatu in the surfing paradise of Bali! The waves were shoulder-high range with occasional bigger sets rolling through. The session started beautifully clean with light offshore winds and fast, lined-up lefts. Andrea and Jerry surfed near the peak, finding smooth, tapered lefts perfect for cruising. Meanwhile, Randy and Nour positioned themselves right at the Racetrack in search of those long, winding rides with multiple turns and barrel sections that the racetrack is famous for.

Everyone snagged great waves and enjoyed the stellar lineup conditions. However, quick timing was absolutely essential today. The tide was moving fast, making it crucial to time your paddle-out perfectly before too much water flooded the shallow reef.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Black Stone

The wet season is out in full force today with heavy rain and erratic winds, but the Bali magic remains: it’s always offshore somewhere.

That “somewhere” today was Nusa Dua. Over at Blackstone, the conditions were surprisingly clean despite the gray skies. Waves were consistently shoulder-high on the sets, offering beautifully shaped lefts and rights. While the rights were the crowd favorite, one standout woman was absolutely ripping, putting on a clinic for everyone in the lineup.

Even on a soggy day, Bali delivers. Compared to most places, a “bad” day here is still a win.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Geger Left

What a morning at Geger Left! The ocean delivered beautifully lined-up lefts offering long, fast walls perfect for performance surfing—we’re talking high-speed top turns, deep bottom turns, and solid cracks off the lip. While the lefts were the main event, regular footers managed to snag some fun rights in the mix.

Despite a touch of side-shore wind, the waves held their shape impressively with clean faces throughout the session. The lineup vibe was completely relaxed, with everyone trading waves and soaking up the conditions. Just a classic, fun session for everyone involved.

Surf Lessons at Toro Toro and Airport Right

The surfers headed out early to Toro-Toro, where shoulder-to-head-high waves greeted them at sunrise. On the right, steeper takeoffs led into long, mellow walls that ran farther than expected. As the tide filled in, some surfers shifted to Airport Right, where the new swell began to pulse and waves broke with more speed and power over the reef. Conditions stayed clean throughout the session.

Surfing the airport reefs is always a unique experience—from the boat ride to the lineup to planes taking off and landing nearby. The waves build quickly and run long down the reef’s angled contour.
