Airport Rights Surf Spot Info, Report and Forecast

Surfing at Airport Rights

Airport Rights is a high-performance Airport Reef wave located just off the southern end of Bali’s airport runway, about 300 meters from Toro Toro. Known for its long, fast, and hollow right-hand waves, it consistently breaks about a foot bigger than Toro Toro thanks to its greater exposure to swell. Accessible only by boat—typically from Jimbaran or Kuta—it’s a favourite among advanced surfers looking for a powerful, challenging ride.

On smaller swells and with enough water on the reef, Airport Rights can be a good option for confident intermediate surfers. At high tide, the wave is more forgiving, offering open faces and long walls to work with. However, even in these conditions, it’s still faster and more critical than nearby alternatives, and Toro Toro generally remains the better pick for those still building confidence. Mid and low tides are best avoided, as the reef becomes dangerously shallow, increasing the risk of injury.

When the swell builds, Airport Rights reveals its true nature—a fast, barreling wave that breaks top to bottom with real power. The end section is particularly challenging due to the reef’s unique shape: as the lip throws over shallow water, the shoulder races ahead in deeper water, creating a slabby, draining bowl. This feature has earned comparisons to waves in Fiji and the Mentawais. Navigating it successfully requires precision and commitment, and it’s not uncommon for mistakes to lead to injuries on the reef. For that reason, this wave is best left to advanced and expert surfers.

Airport Rights is also famously one of Kelly Slater’s favourite waves in Bali. On the right day, with the right tide, it delivers a world-class session—but it demands respect, strong ocean knowledge, and proper preparation.

Surf Lessons at Toro Toro and Airport Right

The surfers headed out early to Toro-Toro, where shoulder-to-head-high waves greeted them at sunrise. On the right, steeper takeoffs led into long, mellow walls that ran farther than expected. As the tide filled in, some surfers shifted to Airport Right, where the new swell began to pulse and waves broke with more speed and power over the reef. Conditions stayed clean throughout the session.

Surfing the airport reefs is always a unique experience—from the boat ride to the lineup to planes taking off and landing nearby. The waves build quickly and run long down the reef’s angled contour.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Airport Rights

A fresh swell has filled Bali’s coastlines, delivering plenty of waves for everyone. With light, variable winds, surfers spread out across the island. Our crew headed to Airport Rights bright and early, taking advantage of glassy, shoulder-high waves in the morning. The conditions were very clean early, with a northwest breeze picking up as the session progressed. The rights held a nice shape, providing multiple sections for doing your best turns.

At this size, Airport Rights offers a fun and friendly wave, and the positive energy in the lineup was evident. However, when the surf gets big, this place gets alot more serious.

Intermediate Surf Lessons at Airport Rights

Yesterday, our surfers enjoyed a perfect day at Airport Rights, with a light crowd as an added bonus. With yesterday’s perfection fresh in our minds, we headed straight back to the famous wave for more. We did not have the perfect conditions we had yesterday, but there was plenty of fun surf on tap. The wind from the west added some texture to the line up, however the faces of the waves were clean enough for fun surfing. The reef produced head-high right-handers breaking for long rides.

Airport rights is a wave located very near the tip of the runway on the Jimbaran side of the airport. It is one of the best right-handers in Bali, and one of the few waves that break right on the west coast.

Intermediate Surf Lessons and Guiding at Airport Rights, Bali

When there’s not quite enough swell for surf camp favourite Toro Toro, the next wave up the reef — Airport Rights — is usually the next stop and that’s exactly where the surf lessons and guiding took place this morning for our intermediate groups.

Not quite as clean as it was yesterday, waves were breaking in the chest to head-high range and the lack of crowds ensured that everybody caught loads of waves.

After breakfast our beginners and intermediates surfed at Dreamland and our advanced guiding group — who surfed the dawn session at Uluwatu — surfed at Greenbowl
