Gunung Payung is a lesser-known break found roughly 300 metres east of the more famous Pandawa Beach, on Bali’s South Coast. Access involves a walk through an abandoned cultural park followed by a scenic descent down a cliffside path—about a 10-minute hike—to a quiet stretch of white sand bordered by clear turquoise water and striking limestone cliffs. The location is stunning in itself, and the wave offers a more relaxed alternative to the area’s busier surf spots.
The wave at Gunung Payung is made up of shifting right-hand peaks, performing best on a mid to high tide. The outer peak dishes out steep, powerful takeoffs with short but punchy walls. In contrast, the inside peak is more manageable, delivering longer rides that sometimes carry through to the inside section. Owing to its exposure to open ocean, Gunung Payung consistently draws in more swell than most other breaks in Bali.
When the swell is small, it’s a solid choice for avoiding the crowds, and the waves tend to come in bigger than expected. On medium swells, the current flowing toward Nusa Dua becomes significant, making both the paddle out and positioning more demanding.
It’s also possible to surf Gunung Payung on a low tide. During these times, the takeoffs are a bit softer, and the wave can stand up on the inside with a potential barrel section. However, the reef becomes more exposed, so surfers need to be confident and aware.
All in all, Gunung Payung is a remote but rewarding option—offering punchy surf and less traffic for experienced surfers who don’t mind putting in the extra effort to get there.
